3 simple fixes for broken links

Jan 8, 2025

This week, we’re focusing on broken links. On Monday, we talked about why fixing broken links matters. Tuesday, we covered how to prioritize which broken links to fix first (helpful if you’ve got a long list!).

Today, I’m sharing three ways to handle broken links. Here’s a cheat sheet:

  • Update the link: If the URL is outdated or there’s a typo, just swap it with the correct one. Problem solved.
  • Remove the link: If the link doesn’t add value or points to something that no longer exists, delete it. Dead links aren’t doing you (or your users) any favors.
  • Use a 301 redirect: For pages that have moved or been replaced, use a 301 redirect to guide users to a relevant new page.
