The first 2 steps to making your content actually work

Feb 11, 2025

Before you write another blog post or craft another social caption, pause for a second. What’s the real goal here?

It seems obvious. But it’s important to take a step back and assess what you’re trying to accomplish… because if you don’t know what you’re aiming for, your content won’t get you there.

So, step 1 is figuring out your business goals. Maybe you want to:

  • Increase brand awareness
  • Generate leads
  • Drive website traffic
  • Improve customer retention

The objective you choose is like a GPS — it guides the nature and scope of content you’ll create. For instance, if your goal is to nurture leads, your content should show them you understand exactly where they’re at and what they need next — think helpful resources, expert tips, and real-world solutions that make their lives easier.

Step 2 is knowing your audience inside and out. Good content speaks directly to the right people — not just anyone who happens to scroll by. Ask:

  • Who are your ideal customers?
  • What problems do they need solved?
  • Where do they hang out online?

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you already know everything about your audience. I’ve seen so many smart business owners get stuck here. Your customers might surprise you if you take the time to really listen and learn about them.

Tomorrow, we’ll share how to turn your business goals and audience insights into a strategic content plan.
